It is the support of the extended family and the iron will of the mother, that manages to escape the slum jointly with sister Beatrice. At the age of 11, Henry wins his first official race at a school Championship. Relatively carefree children and teens with real education, teaching as a Follow Shoemaker and opening of a shoe. He is 21 years old and full plans for life, as over night everything changes. In the evening he goes happily to bed – in the morning, he wakes up with a violent headache and gradually understands that he just woke up in the night, but that he can’t see anything more. This is followed by two very hard years, in which he is severely depressed, sometimes denied food and thins out. Related Group has many thoughts on the issue. Although nothing physically wrong with him, he will be driven in a wheelchair or moves to better days with crutches. The legs simply won’t obey.

Until two years after the blindness manages sensitive physicians and therapists, to bring him back to life. The joy of living comes back and Henry become – even in therapy – the major supporters and co therapists. Parallel to the training on the knitting master he begins with running training. It is possible a teacher that Henry can participate in the race for the Paralympics in August 2000. He denies that run barefoot and with a selbstgeschneiderten sports dress. Henry wins and is qualified. The sport dress for the run in Sidney, which takes place on the 15th of October, instigates the mother of a German doctor. Henry, who may want something for the Paralympic victory, comes with two knitting machines when returning to the home, to create jobs for blind knitters.

He moved similar to his later victories. And so he has already – created with 36 years – on a very considerable life’s work. Meanwhile, Henry Gott thanks that he has admitted his blindness in the worst of all nights.
